I sat outside my beautifully appointed room to watch an array of animals wander aimlessly and peacefully just metres in front of me. The guides skillfully navigated me through the Mara with a passion and enthusiasm that was infectious! And what better than to lie by the lovely pool in an idle heap for the afternoon processing the morning’s drive, soaking up the African sun and preparing for the evening’s delicacies? I only wondered in awe how they could produce such fabulous cuisine in such a remote and breathtaking spot.

The Great Migration began early that year and we were fortunate enough to begin our stay along with the plethora of beasts. Our guide was wise and educated … he was Maasai and had been guiding for many years. He took us out for a night drive, which was one of the most exciting experiences of our lives. The dining was out of this world, and our two (not ONE, but TWO) servers stayed with us the entire time for every meal and we were treated with kid gloves. I would return in a second and cannot stop telling anyone who will listen about Kichwa Tembo Masai Mara!

MIGRATION ON MY DOORSTEP

“Kicwha Tembo (located in the Masai Mara in Kenya) is one of the few places we have ever visited that we’d return to tomorrow if we could – its just that magical. From our guide (Mempe) to our Butler (Elias) to our room steward (Titus) to the head chef (George) everyone we met at Kichwa Tembo was wonderful, welcoming, and friendly. In all of my travels, I’ve never felt as “at home" as I did at Kichwa Tembo.”

The food was outstanding, the location seemed superior to any of the other camps in the Mara, and the accommodations were perfect – we loved the luxurious tents and beautiful communal spaces. The great migration is literally at the doorstep of the camp – we enjoyed cocktails while watching herds of Zebras at the pool one evening and woke up from a nap to see elephants parading by our tent one afternoon between game drives. The wildlife in the Mara was by far the best we saw in Africa (we did game drives in four countries on our trip). We saw the entire Big 5 in our first 2 hour game drive the afternoon we arrived. You just can’t beat experiences like having breakfast literally in the middle of millions of wildebeests and zebras, watching lions feast on their overnight kills, or standing across the river from a family cheetahs drinking. The scenery was also breathtaking. One of the highlights of our stay at Kichwa Tembo and entire African safari was visit ing a local Maasai village (actually the family of our guide). We saw where the children went to school, how the villagers lived, and how the &Beyond foundation was supporting the local woman by helping them become entrepreneurs.

Enjoy lunch, quick siesta style, after lazing in one of the hammocks strung around the grounds. A late afternoon tea serves up some delicious treats before heading out for another exhilarating game drive or bush walk. Dinner is served under the stars where much chatter about the day’s adventures can be shared.

Two scheduled one hour flights operate from Nairobi’s Wilson airport on a daily basis. Either Air Kenya or Safari Link will ensure a safe flight to Kichwa Tembo’s private airstrip overlooking the incredible Masai Mara. Once you have landed in this extraordinary “spotted land”, an exhilarating 30 minute game drive will see you to your luxury safari camp.

KICHWA PRIDE - 26 April 2013
We saw a pride of lions in the late morning moving towards the Olololo gate! They were 15 in total and it seemed like they were hunting - although we left before they did.
